Above I listed some cotton threads and an estimated yardage
and how many plies are in each thread, based on available information. If a column is blank I do not have the
information. It is as accurate as I could manage but not guaranteed! Note that size is not always standard across
brands (as you can tell from the threads listed in the table under the same
categories.) The weight system is common for fine threads, not to be confused
with the designations with # before the number!
A 30 weight thread means that 30 kilometers of thread weights 1
kilogram. One problem is that most threads available on small spools (often
used for lace making and marketed to quilters and machine embroiderers) list
the size and yardage but not the actual weight, so it is difficult to compare
those to the threads in the table above, aside from holding them next to each
other and making an estimate. I suppose
I can weight a spool, use the thread and weight the empty spool as an
estimate. One day I will!
Some helpful terms:
Mercerized: Chemically treated to increase strength and for
a high sheen.
Un-mercerized: Not chemically treated, with a matte finish.
Perle Cotton: S-twisted 2-ply and mercerized for high sheen.
Cordonnet Cotton: 2 ply x3 (so 6 ply) and mercerized for
high sheen.
Gassed: Thread is passed over a flame to singe, so it is
smoother.
Plies: How many strands are twisted to make the one thread.
A real discussion about yarn weights and standards is so
huge as to be outside the scope of what we can chat about here, but there are
some great resources on-line. Remember
that the systems used can differ by what fiber we are talking about, just to
confuse us more.
